In the first round of testing, Harford compared the effects of a spartan, minimalist office space and an “enriched” space with more amenities, like potted plants and large wall graphic prints.

In the next phase of his testing, Harford compared the impacts of two “enriched” spaces, with the only difference being that participants had control over the design of Space A (dubbed “the empowered office”), while the researchers designed Space B.
“The empowered office was a great success–people got 30 percent more done there than in the lean office, and about 15 percent more than in the enriched office [the one decorated by the researchers],” writes Harford. “These are large effects; three people in empowered offices achieved almost as much as four people in lean offices.”
Harford’s findings echoed those recently published in one study by the Journal of Personnel Psychology, which concluded that “space that had ostensibly been decorated by an ingroup was found to promote work-related productivity relative to a lean space that contained no identity-related information” (p. 40).
