Building an Inclusive Brand Image with ADA Compliant Signs

Today’s post explains why installing ADA compliant signs is essential for your brand reputation and legal compliance. Call 615-649-5003 for a free ADA compliant sign quote in Nashville, TN.

Nashville Business Owners Need ADA Compliant Signs

As a general rule, all businesses require ADA compliant signs–unless you work remotely, from your own home, away from a zoned office space.

As per section 36.201 (a) of the Americans with Disabilities Act – Title III Regulations, “no individual shall be discriminated against on the basis of disability in the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of any place of public accommodation by any private entity who owns, leases (or leases to), or operates a place of public accommodation.”

Only the following sign types are exempt, according to Chapter 2, Section 216 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design:

  • Building directories
  • Menus
  • Seat and row designations in assembly areas
  • Occupant names
  • Company names and logos
  • Temporary signs (7 days or less)

All other business signage must be ADA-compliant.

But whose responsibility is it? According to the ADA, it’s 100% yours; the onus falls on “both the landlord who owns the building that houses a place of public accommodation and the tenant who owns or operates the place of public accommodation.”

Nashville Businesses Without ADA Compliant Signs Face Severe Repercussions

As per section 36.503, any businesses found neglecting these duties may face civil monetary penalties, which can be viewed in full on the Electronic Code of Federal Regulations website. First-time offenders may receive some leniency, but will nonetheless have to pay for sign redesigns.

What’s more, Nashville businesses lacking ADA compliant signs send a negative message–an exclusionary one–that could cost them big in terms of brand reputation, customer loyalty, and local relations. An estimated 61-million adults live with disabilities in the United States–about 1 in every 4 people–and without ADA compliant signs, your business excludes them all.

How to Build an Inclusive Brand Image with ADA Compliant Signs

In order to keep your brand image inclusive and reduce your liability, it’s essential that you find a custom shop capable of producing ADA compliant signs. But not just any sign shop will do. ADA compliant signs must meet all the criteria outlined in the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, which includes specific instructions for:

  • Raised characters–depth, case, style, spacing, and character proportions
  • Tactile characters and braille–Position, installation height, and location
  • Visual characters–Finish, contrast, case, style, and character proportions/height
  • Pictograms–Field, finish and contrast, text descriptions, and much more!

Don’t worry–you don’t need to be an expert in ADA design standards. You just need to find somebody who is–and that’s us!
